Purging for a Safer and More Organized Home

by

Spring is a great time to clean and purge items from your home.  As kids grow out of their toys and clothes and adults buy new items, the number of things you have can really add up.  If you don’t manage it, you’ll eventually run out of storage space and end up putting things where they don’t belong.  Aside from storage concerns, a lot of clutter can lead to other problems, including excessive mould and fire hazards, as well as uninvited guests like animals and insects which can also have an impact on your home.

We’ve prepared the following spring purging tips to help you create a more organized and safe home.

Getting organized

Set a goal.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed if you plan to clean your entire home at one time, so choose something manageable for you. Know what you would like to accomplish by the end of the day whether it be cleaning out a drawer, closet, or entire room.

Recruit help.
Many hands make light work, so get your kids and your partner to help out. After all, they likely contributed to a lot of the mess.

Get rid of unused items.
If you haven’t used something in over a year, there’s a good chance you won’t miss it if it’s gone.  Take the time to go through items such as clothing, shoes, electronics, DVDs, and books to purge items you no longer need or use.

Recycle.
Take the opportunity to donate usable items to local charities. Some charities may even come to your house to pick up your donation.  Consider holding a garage sale with the unwanted items and donate the money earned to a charity of your choice.
