Special Edition on Opioids and Overdose in Ottawa

          Special Edition on Opioids and
                 Overdose in Ottawa

This e-bulletin is for parents and others who are concerned about drug use in Ottawa. In the past month, there have been many media reports about illicit opioids and the increased risk of overdose.  Recently, Ottawa Public Health and Ottawa Police Services have been made aware of counterfeit or 'bootleg' drugs found in Ottawa that have been involved in recent life-threatening overdoses and death. Counterfeit pills can be made to look almost the same as prescription drugs.

As a parent, guardian or someone who volunteers with children and youth, you may be asking yourself, what can I do? The top two things that you can do are to learn more about drug issues and to talk to young people about drugs:

·        Learn more about opioids and counterfeit pills by visiting www.stopoverdoseottawa.com.
·
Find some tips for talking to young people about drugs, by going to Youth and Opioids: What Parents Need to Know on Ottawa Public Health's Parenting in Ottawa website.
·
Find more information about existing community opioid education sessions or connect with a Public Health Nurse and other parents and caregivers on the Parenting in Ottawa Facebook page or by calling 613PARENTS (613 727-3687) (Monday to Friday 8:30-4:30).

If you or someone you know is dealing with an addiction, there is help available.
