SHARING THE ROAD

Sharing the road is something motorized vehicle drivers and cyclists as well as pedestrians do.   

The Ottawa Police Service and many others tend to forget the third element in road safety that is the pedestrian.    

It seems that when a pedestrian is involved in accident, that pedestrian must be at fault.    

Why do we stop short of working for zero collisions with zero deaths in our City?

It is recommended that cyclists safety would be improved

* bicycles are treated as other vehicles by motorists

* motorists leave as safe a distance between their vehicle and the bicycle that the driver is passing as is possible given the traffic

* motorists should shoulder check and signal all lane changes

* motorists need to check for bicycles before opening car doors

Cyclists are recommended to

* stop at all stop signs

* use proper hand signals when turning and when stopping

* drive on the right side of the roadway

* proceed only in the designated direction on one-way streets

If you are a dog owner, your pet’s waste feces are your business. 

Dog waste feces are a public health hazard. 

They pollute the environment.

The feces can take the enjoyment out of outdoor activities.

Make it a habit to pick up after your dog.

Improve public opinion of dogs and their owners.
 
 

Pick the feces up: use a bag and/or a hand trowel to pick up the waste and take them home for disposal.

As you may know; in a city-wide evacuation, wildfires have displaced tens of thousands of residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta, including nearby communities.

With damage being assessed at historic levels, the impact on those affected is unprecedented.

I am writing today to ask you to consider supporting #Ottawa4FortMac.

#Ottawa4FortMac is a fundraiser hosted by Ottawa Senators player Chris Phillips and myself. It will take place from 6:30PM to 10:00PM on Wednesday June 8, ‎Aberdeen Pavilion, at Lansdowne Park.

This “western roundup” themed event will feature live music by Ottawa-born Country sensation Kira Isabella, Ottawa Country group River Town Saints and Country brother duo The Abrams, as well as entertainment, refreshments from Ottawa’s craft breweries and offerings from Ottawa’s pizzerias.

Tickets for the Fort McMurray fundraising event are now on sale, at a cost of $ 80 each. 

Tickets are in limited quantities and are available for purchase online here, or by cash payment at Big Rig Brewery locations and at my office at City Hall. Donations made by May 31 will be matched by the Government of Canada. 

This natural disaster may become the costliest in Canadian history, but I know you will agree that the impact on the lives of our fellow Canadians in Fort McMurray is much greater. 

It is crucial that residents of Ottawa unite to assist those who have been affected by this tragedy.  

I encourage you to join us in our commitment to helping support the Canadian Red Cross’s emergency appeal and the United Way’s relief efforts directed towards helping the residents of Fort McMurray rebuild their lives and their community, by attending #Ottawa4FortMac and purchasing your tickets.

Planning and Development  Building Better Connections Gets Great Reviews!  I hope you were able to attend our inaugural Building Better Connections event on May 4, 2016. If you were in the audience at City Hall, or online via our live webcast, you will know it was a successful event. John Campbell gave an interesting and informative presentation on the City of Toronto's Waterfront Revitalization Project and was engaging and knowledgeable. City staff then gave mini-primers on Understanding the Committee of Adjustment and on How to Present at a Standing Committee.  Both presentations drew many great questions from our online and in-person audiences.  If you missed the webinar – you're in luck!
