OLDER ADULTS, June, 2016

Diverse group of older adults participating in different social activities

June 2016 is the 32nd celebration for ‘Seniors Month’ in Ontario, which is an opportunity to honour the contributions that seniors make every day in communities across the province.  Ottawa City Council also declared June as Seniors' Month in Ottawa.

This year's theme was Seniors Making a Difference, was chosen by the Province to recognize the many tireless hours of volunteer work and leadership generously donated by local seniors.  These local seniors have helped to build our communities through active living, shared knowledge, and a diversity of experiences.  The Ontario Senior of the Year Award gives each municipality in Ontario the opportunity to honour one outstanding local Ontarian aged 65 and older.  Each chosen Ontario Senior has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of his or her community.

At the June 8th City Council meeting,  Mayor Jim Watson, presented the Senior of the Year Award to Marjorie Shaver-Jones for her outstanding contributions to the city of Ottawa.  Ms Shaver-Jones served as president of the Copeland Park Community Alliance and is an active volunteer with the Federation of Citizen’s Association of Ottawa as well as with the Kanata Theatre.

As the older population continues to grow, the City of Ottawa remains committed to enhancing the quality of life of older residents..  Through the Older Adult Plan 2015-2018, the City is taking concrete steps to make policies, services, facilities and programs more accessible and responsive to the needs and interests of older persons.
