RENAMING Kanata's Walter Baker Place & Walter Baker Park

The use of the name Walter Baker at Walter Baker Park in Kanata South bordered by Terry Fox, Hazeldean and Maple Grove and the Kanata Recreation Complex located at 100 Walter Baker Place have created confusion with the Walter Baker Complex at 100 Malvern Drive in Barhaven on numerous occasions for many people.

The Parks and Recreation Department has identified a concern with the confusion over the Walter Baker locations since the department has a large programs such as aquatic, hockey, skating programs and other uses including soccer, baseball, football and more that generate a higher risk of a situation where timely emergency response will be required.  Staff at both the Walter Baker Recreation Complex and the Kanata Recreation Complex confirm that they have experienced situations where clients who have registered for a program show up at the wrong location and need to be redirected.

Building Code Services has prepared a street name anomalies list to address some of the anomalies in street names within the City of Ottawa.  I will be asking to include the 100 Walter Baker Place to address this safety concern.  I will also begin the process to rename the park to do all we can to ensure that if someone has a serious injury while participating in an activity at one of our locations, you will receive the fastest possible emergency response.  The Parks and Recreation Department and our Emergency Services have expressed support for a move to change the street name of Walter Baker Place to assist with this issue.  A renaming of the park would be further beneficial since the Walter Baker name would then only apply to the recreation complex in Barhaven.

While I am sure we all appreciate the need to recognize the service Walter Baker provided Ottawa as an MP, we hopefully can also agree that we should not be creating safety issues for our families and future generations in our efforts to recognize him.  Whereas Mr Baker served and lived in the Nepean area where the Walter Baker Complex is located, it only seems proper that is the location we continue to recognize his service.

Due to the above noted safety concerns, I would like to ask for your support to add 100 Walter Baker Place to the naming anomalies list and to begin the park renaming process this year.
