Kids and Drugs: A Parents Guide on Oct 5 2013 at 9:30 am

I am writing to provide you with information about a pilot project running in the west end of Ottawa.  Kids and Drugs is originally an R.C.M.P. initiative that we have adopted and adapted for use in this area.  This 2 and a half hour seminar is for parents, teachers, guardians, aunts, uncles and grandparents etc, who may be interested in getting some skills that may make a difference in a child's life.

Please pass this message along to your members.  If you have a child in your life between ages 8 and 14 and are concerned that they are or may be exposed to drugs, you should attend the October 5th session of "Kids and Drugs: A Parent's Guide to Prevention" hosted by the Ottawa Police Service and the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre. This session will provide you with information on the current drug trends in Ottawa. You will also learn how to talk to young people about drugs, and how to develop assets and critical thinking in young people to help them make appropriate choices.

If interested, please register through the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre. Phone: 613-591-3686.  The session is Saturday, October 5th, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and space is limited.

Thank you,
Lori Fahey

Citizens Academy Civics Bootcamp

We received the following invitation to share:

The Citizens Academy has been very busy recently, and with the help of some exceptional volunteers, we are gearing up for a four session, dual-linguistic learning session, inspired from last year's pilot.
The heart of the program is to make it easier for citizens to understand how City Hall works so they can engage in affecting the change they want to see in their neighbourhoods and have a say in critical city-wide issues. Too often, barriers prevent citizens from getting involved. Citizens Academy wants to unleash civic participation by reducing barriers and offering the tools, confidence, networks and a sense of possibility.
Through three topic sessions on governance, budgeting and land-use planning, a practicum session to put it all into practice, and access to coaches for support, participants will learn:
·  How to navigate City Hall and its decision-making process
·  How to understand and influence where the city spends its money
·  How to have a say on issues that matter to them
·  How citizens have engaged pro-actively and successfully with the City and other civic groups to influence change

The Bootcamp begins October 17th, and the  application  deadline is October 2nd.  For more information about the Civics Bootcamp click here
