Kanata South Community Gardens Project

Kanata South Community Gardens is open for business !

Residents of Kanata South are invited to plant a garden at my house

My lawn has been chosen by the City of Ottawa as a prototype community gardening project. In the next few weeks I will be building a number of raised beds to be used by anyone interested in learning more, and sharing what you know, about growing your own food in Kanata South.

An information session is scheduled for March 29th at 7PM at the corner of Tabaret and Patriot streets, SOHO WEST between Fernbank and Cope.
Our small group of very determined citizens has been working toward establishing a community garden in the South of Kanata.   We have received a small amount of funding to start an educational prototype to gather data in support of a larger more public venue.

There will be six raised beds to be shared amongst those interested - a small plot of land with huge potential for greatness.
Along with the hands-on gardening experience we intend to hold workshops on:
        Organic gardening
        Building garden structures
        Aesthetic lawn replacement
        Composting
        Xeriscaping - for dry summers
And maybe a garden book club

You and your family are welcome to come and share your experiences and learn more about the project. This is the first step in a healthier, more collaborative community for Kanata South.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead
Cheers
Val Collins

Invasive Plants

Sarah Delher's enthousiastic presentation to our March 5th general meeting awakened KHCA to the environmental threats represented by plants brought into North America that are not native to our continent and have few natural contraints on their rampaging expansion.

Three of those plants are the BuckthornGarlic Mustard  and the   Dog Strangling Vine.

To help Katimavik-Hazeldean residents to become aware of these plants, we have linked to Ontario Invasive Plants Council the Un-wanted posters from the Ontario Invasive Species website.

Their “Invading Species Hotline” @ 1-800-563-7711 is also a source of more information on combating and controlling these and other invasive plants.
